Public to be Heard

Charles Mace, Chair of the Auburn Industrial Development Agency commented on the need for Auburn to invest in marketing the City.  

Carl Gutelius, General Manager of the Auburn Doubledays, spoke to Council to report on the team’s 2007 championship season, their record attendance for the season, improvements that are being done to the park, and the 50 part time employees they hire each season.  He also reported several events that are scheduled including a baseball camp for kids, an NCAA tournament in the fall, and several concerts. Mr. Gutelius brought attention to the positive impact of the team and use of Falcon Park on local tourism and business.  He thanked the City for supporting the team and for their anticipated approval of tonight’s resolution to continue the operating agreement with the Doubledays.

City Manager’s Report – Mr. Palesh reported on a meeting he and Mayor Quill attended with Cayuga County, State and local officials regarding economic development and the Governor’s commitment to provide $700 million for rebuilding upstate NY.  

Report of City Officials – Mayor Quill introduced former City Councilors Robert Hunter and James Hutchinson, who were attending as board members and supporters of Auburn Community Baseball.  

Mayor Quill also reported on the following events he participated in during the last week –

*       Forth-Annual Symposium of Energy in the 21st Century at Cazenovia College.


*       MDA (Metropolitan Development Authority) annual meeting in Syracuse with the City Manager, Mike Long, Jenny Haines, and other members of the City’s planning department.

*       Gave the “welcome address” to the parents, faculty, and students at the West Middle School’s, National Junior Honor Society Induction Ceremony.

*       Toured the Willard Chapel, and discussed ways the City can help them promote visitation and community support to aid in the enormous costs of renovation, preservation, and day to day maintenance of the unique historical building and grounds.  

Mayor Quill offered a special acknowledgement to George Holbert Jr. who retired earlier this month after 37 years of service working as a mechanic for the Department of Public Works.

Resolutions –

Council Resolution #45 of 2008 authorizing the Mayor to execute an Operation Agreement between the City of Auburn and the Auburn Community Non-Profit Baseball Association, Inc.  VOTE: Councilor Graney, McNabb, Smith, Brower and Mayor Quill, aye.  

Council Resolution #46 of 2008 authorizing the Mayor to enter into an agreement for Deferred compensation services.  VOTE: Councilor Graney, McNabb, Smith, Brower and Mayor Quill, aye.  

There were no local laws, or tabled legislation.

Other Business – Councilor Brower reported that the Auburn High School New Visions class will present proposals for a City recycling program at next week’s City Council meeting.

Council adjourned to executive session at 6:30PM and returned at 7:00PM.
